Frequently asked questions.
Does my device have a compass sensor?
Most smartphones and tablets made after 2013 include a magnetometer — the sensor that makes compass readings possible. Desktop computers typically do not have one.
Which way is north?
The red needle always points toward magnetic north. Magnetic north differs slightly from geographic (true) north depending on your location — this offset is called magnetic declination. Use the Star Compass tool to find true north.
The compass seems inaccurate — what can I do?
Wave your phone slowly in a figure-8 pattern a few times to calibrate the magnetometer. Keep the device away from metal objects, speakers, and electronics, which can interfere with the sensor.
Does it work without internet?
Yes. Once the page is loaded, the compass uses only your device's built-in sensors. No internet connection is required.
Is my data stored or sent anywhere?
No. Sensor and heading data are read locally in your browser and never sent to any server.
